Deflect is a website security service by eQualitie that protects against application layer DDoS attacks and other cyber threats, improving website performance and availability through its global reverse-proxy edge infrastructure. It offers ethical, transparent, affordable protection, emphasizing free support for non-profit and civil society organizations. Over 80 million readers visit thousands of Deflect-protected websites yearly, about 2% of the internet. Deflect has published numerous investigative reporting over the years.

Ceno is a tool designed for content accessibility in some of the most repressive digital regimes, with a particular focus on areas under a network shutdown. It has been operationally deployed since 2020. The Android version is built from Mozilla’s Android Components and utilizes the Ouinet library to share web content peer-to-peer over an existing Distributed Hash Table (e.g. BitTorrent).

Role Overview:

This is an exciting and challenging role for an experienced data analyst spanning eQualitie’s efforts on website security and censorship circumvention. You will lead our research efforts on botnet fingerprinting, platform security and DDoS attack analytics on the Deflect.ca project, as well as decentralized network measurement work as part of the Ceno.app ecosystem. With your help we will:

  • Produce analytic reporting on DDoS and other types of attacks targeting Deflect clients
  • Provide insights to support DDoS mitigation and improving defences against emerging cyber threats
  • Produce analytics dashboards visualizing the performance of the decentralized Ceno network
  • Collaborate with Ceno developers on new metrics implementations

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of common Internet protocols (HTTP1/2/3, TCP/IPv4+6, UDP, DNS)
  • Experience with open source intelligence gathering, platforms and methods
  • Demonstrable experience with databases (relational, nosql) and relevant domain specific quyering languages
  • Familiarity with Elastic Search and visualization platforms like Kibana, Metabase and Grafana
  • Experience with statistical analysis and data manipulation
  • Practical experience with common p2p networking technologies, like BitTorrent
  • Good communication and report writing skills (English)

Nice to have

  • Experience with anomaly detection (machine learning)
  • Familiarity with Python or any other programming language for automation 
  • Experience in building or operating big data processing pipelines
  • Linux command line experience
